Meet the Roosters!

Fraser came to Wildwood after being rescued by animal control, who collected him and 13 other roosters that had been abandoned in downtown Portland. Understandably, it took some time for him to adjust to his new surroundings, but once he settled into life at the sanctuary and found his place in the barn, his sweet personality began to shine. Today, Fraser is a favorite among regular volunteers. He loves sitting in laps, taking a dust bath, and enjoying his favorite treat: fresh blueberries. His transformation from a frightened stray to a confident, social rooster has been a joy to watch over the years.

Hawkeye was found abandoned and left in a small cage at a homeless camp in McMinnville, Oregon, before making his way to Wildwood. Full of energy and personality, he was once our Hen House rooster, but the ladies made it clear they preferred life without a resident rooster. Since then, Hawkeye has joined the boys and has been learning to navigate flock life. Friendly, curious, and incredibly people-oriented, he loves spending time with volunteers and is always happy to soak up attention. Whether he's being held, following people around, or enjoying a good head massage, Hawkeye is a social rooster who never turns down affection.

Hansel and his brother, Derek, came to Wildwood after being dumped and brought to Multnomah County Animal Services. As the more confident and protective of the pair, Hansel is usually the one leading the way and looking out for his little brother. He can sometimes come across as aggressive, but his behavior is rooted in loyalty and a desire to keep both himself and Derek safe. After everything they've been through, both boys are still learning that sanctuary life is a place where they can finally relax, feel secure, and be loved.

Koko is a handsome rooster with a big personality and an even bigger heart. Originally surrendered by an owner, he grew up being cuddled and carried around by a young girl, which explains why he loves attention so much! His best friend is Roadrunner, and he's one of the most social roosters in the flock. While he can sometimes seem a little pushy with people, he's really just asking for extra love and affection. Koko is also quite the acrobat—you'll often find him balancing proudly on arms, shoulders, or even heads! He doesn't let his "rooster scoliosis" slow him down one bit.

Derek's journey to Wildwood began after he and his brother, Hansel, were dumped and eventually brought to Multnomah County Animal Services. With time running out and nowhere else to go, these bonded brothers found a safe haven with us. Derek is the quieter half of the duo, happily following Hansel's lead wherever he goes. You'll rarely spot one without the other!

Cebra and his longtime companion, Mariposa, came to Wildwood after one of our volunteers stepped in to rescue them and take responsibility for their care when a family member could no longer look after them. The bonded pair had spent most of their lives confined to a cage, with little opportunity to experience the freedom, space, and enrichment that come naturally to chickens. Thankfully, their story changed when their rescuer brought them to Wildwood. Cebra has since moved into Rooster Row, where he’s settling into his new surroundings. We’re hopeful that, in time, he’ll find a special bond with one of our resident roosters and discover a whole new sense of community.

Roadrunner earned his name because of how fast and impossible to catch he was when he first arrived at Wildwood. These days, he's traded his speedy escape tactics for friendship, snacks, and plenty of attention. Best friends with Koko, the two can often be found sharing treats, roaming Rooster Row together, and cuddling side by side at night. Roadrunner loves exploring the barn and following volunteers up and down the stairs to the loft. While he may still deliver the occasional peck, it's usually his way of asking for attention from his favorite humans.

Bobby is our gentle giant with a big heart to match his size. He was found and brought to Multnomah County Animal Services with an injured spur, and because he needed more medical care than the shelter could provide—and would likely have a hard time finding a home with his injury—Wildwood welcomed him into the family. Despite his rough start, Bobby quickly showed everyone what a sweet and people-friendly rooster he is, winning over volunteers with his calm and loving personality. These days, he's taken on an important role as the honorary uncle to our goat triplets. Affectionately known as “Uncle Bobby,” he can often be found keeping them company and proving that even the biggest roosters can have the gentlest hearts.
